Hello, I am Sylvia.
I am a Registered Play Therapist (CPT, RPT-USA) and a Registered Social Worker (RSW, MSW) in Vancouver with a master’s degree in social work.
As a first-generation immigrant from Hong Kong, I can speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. I was born and raised in Mainland China before I moved to Hong Kong to study and work as a social worker.
Over the past decade in Hong Kong and Vancouver, I have been supporting children and families from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Asian, African, European communities, newcomer and refugee families, in the hospital, preschools, and in the community.
My experiences primarily focus in providing play therapy for children and preteens who have low self-esteem, behavioral issues, anxiety, selective mutism, depression, and other challenges in life such as living with trauma, divorce/separation, and violence/abuse.
While working in healthcare, I have also been supporting children with chronic health conditions and their families by offering counselling, consultations, and advocacy for resources.
In my spare time, I love traveling, cooking, and spending time with my family, and you may run into me at a florist’s in the neighborhood.
My Approach:
I believe in a person-centered and humanistic counselling approach. My mission in Starry Wonderland Play Therapy is to provide a safe and nurturing space for children where they are heard, understood, and empowered during their journeys.
Child-Centered Play Therapy can let children be truly themselves, process their living experiences and feelings through play. I highly value the parents’ wisdom in parenting and the collaborative relationship with them. I trust that every family can cultivate their resilience through developing secure and healthy attachments.
